Luxembourg-based HR tech company Zortify and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg are pioneering next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) for the European context in the domain of Human Experience Management (HXM).

The two organizations are collaborating to pioneer the ethical use of AI and trust in a European context. With the upcoming EU AI Act, there is a pressing need to work on AI, especially in the fields of domain-specific, regional-specific, and explainable AI modeling for HR use cases.

The use of AI in HR tech has been gaining momentum, as it has the potential to improve human decision-making especially in selection and development of employees to prevent discrimination and biases. By using the technology to better understand employees needs we increase the engagement and the performance of the whole organization. However, the use of AI in HR tech also poses ethical and privacy concerns.

Therefore, Zortify and SnT have teamed up to create AI that is not only usable but also transparent, explainable, and understandable for everybody.

The future of AI is human. At its core, AI is a reflection of ourselves, so it is essential that we create ethically and responsibly in order to reflect the best of us. Christopher Morse, Co-director of ZortifyLabs

The project defines three major pillars

  • The first pillar is machine learning. The team will train new language models built on ethically sourced datasets to understand European languages at a higher level, especially low-resource languages like Luxembourgish.
  • The second pillar is explainability. The intention is to make algorithms more transparent by looking under the hood and developing other methods to understand how highly complex language models make decisions.
  • The last pillar is interaction design. The project aims at understanding the needs of non-expert-users to develop interactive front-end experiences to allow them to use the technologies and gain insights without any expertise of their own.

We aim at providing a balanced, usable NLP-solution for experts and non-experts alike.” Siwen Guo, Co-director of ZortifyLabs

Prof. Tegawendé F. Bissyandé, Principal investigator of the project at SnT is “excited about the research opportunities that come with the challenges associated to ethical and responsible AI. Collaborating with Zortify will bring about practical innovations in relation to key AI pillars we have been working on, such as Explainability of models.”

The Zortify-SnT-collaboration aims to create an AI that represents the diversity of individual personalities and improves the human decision-making process. By developing and hosting the AI in Luxembourg, Zortify and SnT are also ensuring that it is "Made in Luxembourg."
